Christ Church Chair

Project Details

This chair was originally designed for Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. Since then it has been manufactured for churches all over Ireland and the UK, as well as in Australia.

To date, a total of 40,000 units have been produced, with zero returns for quality issues.

Design Idea

The brief was to design a high-quality, durable stacking chair that would add to the architectural features of the cathedral.
The side rail detail allows the chair to be stacked so as to avoid the seat parts coming into contact with each other.
The back of the chair incorporates a steam-bent part on which are carved images of ‘the foxy friars’ as found on floor tiles in the cathedral – ‘the foxy friars’ are believed to be caricatures of Franciscan friars. (Visitors to the cathedral take particular delight in these images.)

Construction

Mortise and tenon joints, with cross-pinning, which ensures the chair is firmly held together.
Seat and back designed to allow easy replacement of upholstery
Generally manufactured from ash or oak
Can be coloured to exactly match existing furniture

Materials

Only the highest-quality materials are used, from the sustainably sourced timber to the in-house manufactured links.

Fabrics

We have a vast selection of some 1,200 fabrics to choose from, from tweeds and moquettes to leathers and dralons.

Stackability

Seven benches can be stacked on flat ground, or 10 on a special trolley.

Linking

Chairs can be linked front and back to create straight-line formations, or on the front only to make curved formations.
We can also supply floor rails in straight and curved formats, which can link chairs in any layout.
The linking unit that we designed is unique in the industry. It is bolted to the chair and not just screwed into the leg. Made from cast brass, it is of unmatched quality.
